Hello!  I’m Jim McManus, Solicitor and Director of Sandgate Law, a new legal practice established in Ayr in September 2011.

I am originally from Ayr. I began studying law in 1999 and worked with Bonnar and Company Solicitors, one of Scotland’s leading personal injury compensation claims specialists.

My experience has convinced me that personal injury solicitors must be prepared to fight to secure the maximum compensation that clients are entitled to. Even where liability has been accepted then the amount of compensation needs to be fought for. The opponents in your case will be insurance companies and you can be sure that they will be employing their own experts to fight for their interests.

Recently I have become concerned at the ever growing attacks on the so-called “compensation culture”. The truth is that people are only entitled to compensation when there is a legal obligation on another party to compensate them. You will only receive compensation if you are entitled to it.  Do you imagine that insurance companies would pay compensation if you were not?

I set up Sandgate Law along with my colleague Ken Thompson because I wanted to create a law firm that was approachable, accessible and yet highly professional. At Sandgate Law we think that if you instruct a lawyer to act on your behalf then you should expect more than just professionalism. You should expect to establish a personal relationship with that lawyer.  You should expect openness, accessibility, commitment and a determination to fight to secure the maximum level of compensation in your claim.

I am a mature entrant to the legal profession having previously been a successful manufacturer and exporter of capital goods to European and Middle Eastern markets.

One day in 1999 I sat down and totalled up how much my company had spent on legal fees in the previous twelve months, decided it was too much and so took myself back to University to study law with the objective of helping my firm consolidate and develop its presence in the UK and overseas on a sound legal footing.

Having travelled abroad extensively to develop the business I subsequently decided to make the switch to law full-time and was fortunate enough to obtain a traineeship with Vallance Kliner & Associates in Glasgow for which special mention and thanks must go to Stephen Kliner and Stephen Vallance for taking me on as a mature trainee.

I was admitted to the Law Society of Scotland in October 2006 and set up Sandgate Law with the objective of creating a more client-friendly law firm which is approachable, accessible and highly professional.
